THE "FATHER ABRAHAM" WARRIORS

20 You will be true to Jacob, and show mercy to Abraham… Micah 7:20a (NIV)

One of the badest jams, the kind we’d want to get our groove on with was the Sunday School track “Father Abraham!”  For those who grew up on flannel graph and sock puppet Bible stories, you know what I’m talking about.  This was our battle song—our marching song:  Right arm and left arm moving, right foot and left foot involved in the action.  And this is where we’d mix it up, this is where we’d freak out the enemy—to show how crazy we were we’d nod our head while turning around.  Imagine you’re the enemy and you see an army of kids marching toward you over the horizon.  As they approach the battle field you notice not only are they marching but heads are nodding and kids are spinning…that’s a battle you don’t stick around and fight because you don’t know what crazy kids like that are capable of.  Get out of there quick!

I only bring that up to remind you of one of the lines of the song:  “…many sons had Father Abraham…”  It’s true.  When you look at Abraham and Jacob, the difference is in the generations that came after.  Abraham was the father of many nations while Jacob was the father of one.  The depths of theological truth in this one verse is amazing.  Mercy promised to Abraham the father of many nations which could mean that mercy is offered to everyone.  Abraham, the one God called out of a pagan land to be His.  Isn’t that where God found all of us?  Lost and hopeless?  Unable to rescue ourselves?  That’s the promise of mercy:  For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life!”  I’m a whosoever.  Are you?
