THE LAST WORDS OF A DEAD MAN

When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, “Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness, because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the Lord.” Hosea 1:2 (NIV)

“Wife, I’d like to introduce you to someone special.  If you see them around the house I wanted you to know who they are.  Wife, this is my girlfriend.  Girlfriend, this is my wife.”—the last words of a dead man.

What causes a marriage to break down?  What causes a man or woman to be unfaithful to their spouse?  The key is found in today’s verse by looking at two words:  “departing from.”  A loss of pursuit.  Men, we are hunters.  Just because you’ve bagged the trophy wife that doesn’t mean the pursuit is over.  A happy marriage is one where the chase never ends.

Here’s where we go wrong with our relationship with God.  We get salvation and the chase ends.  But the truth is the chase has just begun.  Our whole life should be Philippians 3:13:  forgetting the things which are behind to follow after Him, the One we can never fully attain.  To depart from the Creator to serve the creature is adultery.  An adulterer is someone who becomes another’s instead of God’s.  The Psalmist says (prepare yourself for another King James Version colorful description):  “thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.”
