WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 1 Peter 1:3

I’m a child of the 80’s:  Our iPods were called Walkmans.  Our PS4’s were called Atari’s.  Our Michael Jackson looked different than he did before his death and wore only one glove.  Our playground equipment was made of steal and our seat-belts were optional.

Near the end of the 80’s a movie hit theaters called Weekend at Bernie’s.

The story is about 2 friends that were invited to their boss’s (Bernie’s) beach house for the weekend.  Bernie is killed and these two friends decide to not allow a small setback like death put a damper on their weekend plans.  They pretend Bernie’s still alive, carrying him around so no one thinks anythings wrong.  And of course, as in any self respecting 80’s comedy, hijinks ensue.

This Easter weekend, I can’t help but think about Weekend at Bernie’s (I never claimed to be the most spiritual).  How often are we dragging around something dead, trying to convince others its still alive:  A marriage on life support, a career that’s D.O.A, our once robust hope, our joy, our future—like a goldfish now with XX on its eyes, circling the bowl in its final flush into goldfish afterlife, dead.  But we play it off like everything is fine, right?
“How’s it going?”
“GREAT!”
“What about that?”
“What?”
“That corpse your dragging around?”
“It’s fine.  Quit looking at it.  Don’t judge me.”

Well, today I’m pointing out your corpse.  Why?  Because the tomb is empty.  Jesus resurrection means we have a living hope!  Jesus specializes in bringing dead things to life:  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10  We drag it around and try to hide it because we think bringing it back to life is up to us.  It’s not.   He can.  He’s still bringing dead things to life!

So today, admit and yield.  Acknowledge and surrender.  Quit hiding it and give it to Him.

And this Sunday, make it to church to celebrate with others that Jesus is alive!  The tomb is empty and we have a living Savior and a living Hope!  Happy Easter!
