21 Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask. Philemon 1:21 (NIV)
Are you a “go the extra mile” kind of person? I guess I should give you an example: Your spouse tells you they need to talk and they just want you to listen. They begin and you listen. What they’re saying is just begging for insight from your vast knowledge, from your many years of experience. You could just listen but that’s not like you. You’re a “go the extra mile” kind of person. They know that about you, right? They chose to talk to you and they can’t expect you not to say something. So what do you do? You “go the extra mile” and chime in. That’s exactly what I’m not talking about.
The “go the extra mile” idiom which basically means to make an extra effort, is believe to come from Jesus: “If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two” (Matthew 5:4). So are you a “give them less that they ask” or a “bare minimum” or a “go the extra mile” kind of person? Well, let me tell you something about God – He’s the “go the extra mile” God. He gives us more than we can ask or imagine. So Paul was confident that if Philemon consulted with God about what to do with Onesimus, he’d do even more than Paul asked. Why? God’s an extra mile God. In fact you can tell who lives under the direction of God. They do as He does. They give to others. They do for others. What God gives them, it’s given away.
Question:
Are you a “give them less than they ask” or a “bare minimum” or a “go the extra mile” kind of person? Why do you think you are that way?
Why do people hold back from going the extra mile?
God being the “go the extra mile” God should affect us how?
